VERSANT ANNOUNCES FOUNDING MEMBERSHIP IN
THE INTELLIGENT NETWORK FORUM

Support For Technical Initiatives Further Evidence of
Versant's Leadership In Telecommunications Industry

MENLO PARK, Calif. -- October 16, 1996 -- Versant Object Technology (NASDAQ: VSNT) today announced that it has joined the newly organized Intelligent Network (IN) Forum as a founding member. The IN Forum is an open, non-profit communications industry consortium comprised of service providers, equipment vendors, software developers, systems integrators, research and engineering organizations, end users and other interested parties. In addition to Versant, IN Forum member companies include AG Communication Systems, Ameritech, Andersen Consulting, AT&T, Bellcore, GTE, Hewlett-Packard, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Tandem Computers, and Texas Instruments.

According to Barry Wetmore, director of telecommunications at Versant, "Developers of Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) services are recognizing the need for increased levels of standardization, particularly as it involves interoperability across heterogeneous service creation and management platforms. The IN Forum has identified some key areas for increased technical collaboration and Versant looks forward to participating so that software engineers can accelerate the development and deployment of intelligent network services worldwide."

The IN Forum's mission is to promote the continued growth and acceptance of Intelligent Networks by providing an international forum to address interoperability and management issues related to the implementation of IN technology and applications. The IN Forum and its members will promote and influence international standards; develop and publish IN implementation agreements; encourage interoperability; facilitate application development; identify requirements common to the advancement of IN technology; and provide IN information and educational material.

"Broad industry support and cooperation from leading companies like Versant is essential to the continued growth and development of IN technology and services worldwide," said Mona Johnson, interim IN Forum chairperson. "By working together, we can create open IN solutions that offer service providers choice and flexibility that make them more competitive. This will ultimately provide consumers with timely, innovative and cost-effective solutions and services."

Versant has long been an active member of key telecom industry consortiums like the Network Management Forum and the CATV industry's CableLabs. By complying with key specifications, Versant's ODBMS will meet the technical requirements of those developing next-generation IN applications.
